Do I need to protect my website? – The Complete Video

The Importance – Do you need to protect and secure your website? Yes! Even if your site is small and doesn’t make any money, securing your site is essential. Website security is important to keeping hackers and cyber-thieves from accessing sensitive information. Without a proactive security strategy, businesses risk the spread and escalation of malware, attacks on other websites, networks, and other IT infrastructures.

SSL –  SSL stands for Secure Socket layer – It is the standard technology for keeping an internet connection secure. Most of the browsers now make it mandatory and do not rate a website well without it.  Any data transferred between users and sites, or between two systems become impossible to read by using encryption algorithms. It prevents criminals from reading and modifying any information transferred, including potential personal details.

Malware protection – Use an anti-malware software or plugin to scan and protect your site from malicious code. Malicious code can be pushed in for various reasons. Hackers might want to control your site. Often, bitcoin mining code is added. This compromises the website sanctity and the website may be clocked for the same. It is a tedious task to recover a compromised website.

Firewall – Make sure you use a web application firewall (WAF). A firewall is necessary as It reads every bit of data that passes through it to protect your site. It sits between your website server and the data connection. It blocks all hacking attempts. It also filters out other types of unwanted traffic, like spammers and malicious bots. Bots may attack the website hundreds of times in a minute, leading toa DDoS situation – Direct Denial of Service, compromising the website availability and accessibility.

Use Strong Passwords – This is one of the prime engines of a hacked website. Don’t make your password a familiar phrase. It might be easy for you to remember the phrase but a  password cracking software will easily break through that in no time.  Create a unique password. Keep changing the password periodically. Use 8-12 character passwords having special characters, upper and lower case alphabets and numbers.
